Superconducting sensor identifies liquids

Fast and reliable identification of liquids is of great importance in security, biology and beverage industry. An unambiguous identification of liquids could be made by electromagnetic measurements of their dielectric functions in the frequency range of their main dispersions, but this frequency range, from a few GHz to a few THz, were not covered by any conventional spectroscopy. Researchers at the Institute of Solid State Research in Jülich, Germany have developed a technology that holds promise for reliably detecting potentially explosive substances and differentiating them from harmless liquids.
