I have been out of electronics for too long. Can someone point me to a definition to understand what a +/- powersupply is, and how you attain it? Specifically like a computer type switch mode ps, what does a +5 and -5 volt mean?

And I dont mean the generic polarity of a trivial ps either;->

Thanks

A power supplies output is only the voltage potential between the terminals. It's polarity is determined by which terminal is used as the reference.

just for  a beginner :

for any circui to function with reliablity except for special autotransformers,
+/-5V is equivalent to 0 and 10V supply.

potential difference requires no reference but a potential does.
thats it.

Hi Ritmo2k

I've tried to answer what I think is your question with a diagram...

+5v means a positive supply relative to some common terminal and likewise -5v means a negative supply relative to some common terminal.

Hope that helps

i always compare voltage with water levels.believe me there is perfect analogy.
ive seen people
converting electrical problems to hyraulic problems and solve them.!!!!!!
