The question is; are the four IDE ground pins connected to the negative of the power connector onboard the HDD or not?
On the motherboard they are connected but this does not help if the HDD gets its power from another source.

I know you and Audioguru do not get along frictionless at all times and I don’t want to choose sides here. I do not agree with AG at all times but still I have to admit that he knows a few things and he helps many with their problems and ideas. You too have to give him some credit for this even though he’s not the easiest person to communicate with. I do also think that some of the projects here are very poor and needs improvement to work well. This said, I don’t mean AG is a candidate for moderating!

The alternator does not produce more current than the circuit consumes at the regulators pre-set voltage!

If the HDD is an IDE type the IDE bus needs to have common ground with the motherboard or the two floating grounds can obtain a destructive voltage between them. This means there is no protection against static or some stray voltages. My guess is the IDE controller circuit in the HDD is gone! :(

Yes, I agree the methods are probably the difference here not the copper. I haven’t gone deep at all into this but from what I have read things have been learned from optical fiber signaling even though these are conducting light.

You can find a few threads here in our forum (no news for some time though) if you search. My personal opinion about this (free energy) is that it is not possible to go against the laws of physics. ;)

I have a feeling E-Lab would improve if all boards had moderator/s. Some issues need attention and a moderator (or a few) for each board might be a good thing.

This new board (moderators only) will serve best if we all speak strait and honest to and about each other at all times. We must be able to give and receive criticism between us when necessary. (I know I’m not a saint!).

I try to use only compound and no mica if not in conflict with polarity and/or electrical insulation, this gives better thermal conduction. If I need the electrical insulation I use the rubber type insulators which do not need compound (less mess)! ;D

A man owns a parrot that swears like a sailor. He can swear for five minutes straight without repeating himself. Trouble is, the guy who owns him is a quiet, conservative type, and the bird's foul mouth is driving him crazy.

One day, it gets out of control. The guy grabs the bird by the throat, shakes him hard and yells, "Quit it!" But this just makes the bird mad and he swears more than ever. Then the guy gets mad and says, "Now you're going to pay." He locks the bird in a kitchen cabinet.

This really aggravates the bird and he claws and scratches, and when the guy finally lets him out, the bird cuts loose with a stream of vulgarities that would make a veteran sailor blush. At this point, the guy is so mad that he throws the bird into the freezer.

For the first few seconds, there is a terrible racket. The bird kicks and claws and thrashes. Then it suddenly gets very, very quiet. At first the guy just waits, but then he starts to think that the bird may be hurt. After a couple of minutes of silence, he's worried enough to open the freezer door.

The bird calmly climbs onto the man's outstretched arm and says, "Awfully sorry about the trouble I caused you. I'll do my best to improve my vocabulary from now on." The man is astounded. He can't understand the transformation that has come over the parrot. Then the parrot asks, "By the way, what did that chicken ever do to you?"

I’m not an expert but I believe the “dead time” here is very short and the only purpose is to prevent the output transistors from conducting simultaneous and explode! The modified sine wave inverters I have seen does not use the three level method described earlier but a multiple step ramp-up ramp-down output.

Yes I use my bench vice too! I have made many IDE and SCSI cables and others too, no problemo! Put some pieces of plywood or similar in between as support and DON’T put too much pressure on them just to make them snap in place! ;)
