How is that possible ?Anyway, I would like to ask if there are any other companies thatdo the same as well. And finally, has any greek fellow ordered from MAXIM with regular (free) shipping ? If yes, how long does it take for the mail to reach home ?

MP
How this is possible: The IC companies want "you" the engineer to use their product in a design. If they give you a 25 cent part and you make a good design with it and it becomes a product, they will sell thousands of this part to the manufacturer of the product. This kind of makes you a part of their sales team in a way.I have gotten many microprocessor chips this way. It is better than purchasing several and then deciding which ones are best for your project. Also, many have a link to their newsletter and they will inform you if there is a new part. You can get a sample of it before it hits the market. Check the "Yes" box for the newsletter from these companies.MP

MP
Billy, Mixos might be a better source for the Microchip devices (PIC). I have not used them for quite some time now. I primarily use the Atmel AVR series and ATMEGA series. In my case, I have a local distributor, which takes my sample order and ships them to me, usually 2 each.MP

billy
You won't believe this story... :oAs I have written before, I have ordered samples from some companies in order to find the best one, which is of course TI (best record : TWO days from Order to Delivery, from US to Greece). :oBut today I received something which I never ordered (and still don't know if I CAN order at all) : a five kilo box full with data books, FREE of charge, right into my door ! :o :o :oI know you won't believe me, so I attach a photo with all the stuff laid on to my floor ! ;)So, please pick the right answer to the question "why ?"a. This was all a delivery mistake and I am just the lucky guy.b. A hacker log into my account, ordered all this and paid for it !c. TI has a LOT of money to give around and they just don't care !d. They have read my past thread about the qualifications and they decided to give me a gift. For your information, a local electronics store sells ONE of those data books for over 30 euros and even more !WOW ! :o

MP
I have noticed lately that all my free samples from Maxim have been very small surface mount rather than pdip. Anyone else getting this? Sure makes for hard prototyping.MP
billy
In the request form of Maxim you have to specify the desired package type, instead of the 'no pref' option !Of course the requested samples must exist in PDIP package, some of them are SMD only. MP
Yes, I know this. But the ones I have been requesting lately are not available in this package as samples. It looks as if I am going to spend a little time making adapter boards. ::)MP
MP
I think that I should add:I am very grateful to these companies for providing samples for my prototyping purposes. We might rate them as fast or slow or grumble about package types available, but the bottom line is, they are free and an expense I do not have to provide to find out something is not what I want. I did not want my previous post(s) to seem like I was not appreciative of this service from them.MP
