I have done the same many times and got my parts. Quote
gg4rest Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 I have another tip for everyone. If there is a part that isn't a sample, you can usually perform a "escalation" where you can get more expensive parts if you can justify why you need the part pretty well. I got a DSP that way because I said the microcontrollers I used here insufficient for the task I was doing (I had more detail than that, but you get the picture). It doesn't always work and also probably depends on your country. Also, some companies that don't offer samples (on their site) will if you plead your case to them. Especially students because if a student looks favourably on the company, one day he will be buying parts for his company. Now, all I need is a place to get free sockets, capacitors, and resistors! And if they have been kind to you in the past, you tend to favor them.. :)btw National stopped sending samples to all free/ISP/and school emails that I have. I would gladly pay the shipping, but they want shipping for EACH IC sample.. so thats like 16$ if I want some + and - regulators or something...btw stuff like sockets, caps, resistors its easier to buy surplus. Check ebay or locally, you can get then for pennies. But there was one place that had nice socket samples, if you email me I can go find the site. (thomas997 at hotmail.com). Quote

Ldanielrosa Posted October 18, 2005 Report Posted October 18, 2005 It might have something to do with your profile. TI/BurrBrowm has always sent me everything I've asked for (and some of it was pretty expensive), but then I've never requested that many part numbers in one fell swoop. Quote
Ihme Posted October 18, 2005 Report Posted October 18, 2005 Yea .. that is probably true maybe.Maybe I'll just order them in smaller quantities. Quote
puli Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 I recently recieved free samples from Microchip, but I was shocked by the customs. So, people in India, be prepared to spend some money (still cheaper than actually buying it :)) Samples from National has been by far the fastest (in a week). I recieved a few chips and some heavy data books and application notes. Although they came by post, everything except the cds were intact.Analog ships by DHL to India and this can be a problem if u live in a remote location. Similar is the case with Texas instruments, Microchip and Freescale. They ship by FEDEX and may not even execute the order unless you live in a city, where FEDEX service exists.I had some trouble with Maxim guys where they asked me to fax my company letter head(Which I did not have), to confirm the sample order. What I still dont understand is why I had to pay customs duty for Microchip sample, when there was no customs intervention for my sample from Analog, which was 3 times costly. MP Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 International shipments are tricky this way. If the sender is not careful of how to declare the item in the right category, then it will seem like it is worth more to the customs agent. They just look at the value and the classification number of the item on the invoice. This really makes a difference since some countries charge the receiving person for a high percentage of the worth of the product if the classification is in a certain number range.MP Quote

MP Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 Do big companies such as TI, MAXIM, etc send samples to students or you have to be an engineer?what are the restrictions??Companies differ, but usually, in their questionaire, they are looking for Engineers with an upcoming project. Many will send parts to students but I have heard that this is not such a common practice as it used to be.MP Quote
