New2Electronics
Anybody have a schematic to make a LED strobe circuit? I would like to try to make one with different flash pattern and have it operate about 50 led lights at a time... Will be using 12 volts from an automobile for power. Thanks,
audioguru
Hi again, New,Although I wouldn't call an ordinary LED a "strobe" light, I have built projects using ultra-bright LEDs that were powered with 100mA current pulses, and the resulting flashes of light were dazzling, blinding and could be seen for miles.Have you seen the "Dancing LEDs" circuit in our projects section? It flashes a sequence of LEDs with control by a microphone or music source. A low frequency oscillator can control the sequence if you wish, instead of the microphone. The circuit has an option to power up to 10 strings of 5 LEDs each, which is exactly the 50 that you need. Instead of the LEDs being in sequence, you can make any pattern that you want. It uses the 4017 IC that you are now familiar with. The project is here:http://www.electronics-lab.com/projects/motor_light/021/index.html
ante
New,Here is an article by the respected Robert Penfold. This is not exactly what you asked for but I think it0799g.pdf
vainajala
Luxeon Star LEDs driven by some sort of oscillator circuit like in Ante's attachment might be really powerful! :)These are the only LEDs i know with up to 5 watt of power capability, too bad that they are very expensive... :P

vainajala
Ante,Yes, it just a matter of how short time they are illuminated. But what if somehow the circuit fails and continuos 2A goes through the LEDs... :-X
ante
vainajala,They will have a very short life with 2A, a few seconds perhaps! It better not happen with the most expensive LED:s. :oAnte ::)
vainajala
[move]this is off-topic[/move]At school we tried to "fry" some cheap LEDs with a 30V / 4A supply, some leds sent nice smoke signals, but some even exploded!Of course that wasn't very wise, but entertaining indeed ::)
