The only formulas for transistors that I can think about is the ones that are how they are made.

Just learn how transistors work then look at the spec's for one on its datasheet. Look at its current gain (it is a range of gain numbers) and give it enough base current for the collector current you want in your circuit.
Don't exceed any of its max ratings.
