Calculating Total Reactance

Recommended Posts

do you add it or find the difference ( subtract) ?

X= XL+Xc or is it this X = XL- Xc  or this X= Xc-XL

"Pure reactances
Pure inductive reactances (XL) and capacitive reactances (XC) simply add together
when coils and capacitors are in series. Thus, X =XL+XC. In the RX plane, their vectors
add, but because these vectors point in exactly opposite directions

Hi

complexnum.jpg
complexnum2.jpg
at a certain freq Xl = Xc
so the series Z = 0
and the parallel Z = infinity
if you still confused, please choose some values to C and L and try calculate Z at different frequencies.

You can do it either way as long and you keep your signs consistent.

Example (XT = Xc-XL)
The reactance in the circuit is equal to the absolute value of Xc-XL

If the value of XT is positive, the reactance is capacitive, if it is negative, it is inductive.

If you reverse the formula, the opposite is now true, positive values are inductive and negative numbers are positive.
