Query about batteries

Hello!

I was wondering if someone could clarify something for me?
For example lets say i have a 12v battery that is rated at 100AH
Does this mean the battery will supply 100 amps for one hour?
or for example 1 amp for a hundred hours?
Even if something as small as a model motor was connected to this supply, would it draw the current and voltage it needed or would it overload and burn out the motor?

Thanks in advance,
Sgt

Hi Sgt Siff,
Welcome to our forum. ;D
A 12V 100Ah battery is a pretty big car battery.
100A for 1 hour would probably cause its electolyte to boil then it would become dry.
It can provide 100A or 200A for a few seconds to start a car's engine.
It would provide 20A for 5 hours.

An electric motor draws as much current as it needs. If it draws 1A from series-connected AA battery cells that total 12V then it will draw only 1A from your big 12V car battery.

An electric motor draws much more current when it works hard, when it is stalled or when it starts running.
