ECPOWER
Does anyone know if there is a danger or concern with running a transformer at say 5 or 10 percent of its capacity? For example using a 150 KVA transformer for a load of only 5 KVA
Hero999
Why would there be any danger? Think about it.
electronics_shamim
It is a waste of "power" so generated by the tfmr i.e. 150KVA. If you have the requirement of 5 KVA then you can go for a 7KVA max. Is not it!!!
Hero999
You're right, it's a waste of power because a 150kVA transformer will have more losses than a 7kVA transformer. However, the transformer doesn't generate any power, it just converts it from one voltage/current to another. A 150kVA transformer with no load connected to it will supply 0VA and it won't consume anywhere near 150kVA, the only apparent power consumed would be the magnetising current and the real power consumed would be the core losses plus a small copper loss.
