LM358 - Dual Low Power Operational Amplifier

Recommended Posts

Utilizing the circuit designs perfected for recently introduced Quad
Operational Amplifiers, these dual operational amplifiers feature 1) low
power drain, 2) a common mode input voltage range extending to
ground/VEE, 3) single supply or split supply operation and 4) pinouts
compatible with the popular MC1558 dual operational amplifier. The LM158
series is equivalent to one

This Chinese SPAM was also posted on another site.

The LM158 IS NOT new, it is about 39 years old.
It is noisy (hiss), has crossover diistortion and has trouble above only 2kHz.
Its max supply voltage is only 32V.

I replace it with an MC33172 that has the same very low supply current and inputs and outputs that work at its negative supply that can be ground, has no crossover distortion, has a 44V maximum supply and goes up to 35kHz.
The MC33171 is a single opamp and the MC33174 is a quad (replaces an LM124).

The LM358 is not Chinese, it is American. The MC3317x is also American.

What trouble?

Its slew rate is 1/10th as high as half-decent opamps because it is low power. The low power produces horrible crossover distortion.
Its datasheet has a graph "Large Signal Frequency Response" that shows it produces an output of only 12.5V p-p at only 5kHz. At full output level of 30V p-p it barely produces only 2kHz.
Half-decent opamps are perfect at full output level at 100kHz.

That MC33172 is unlikely to be a full substitute for the widespread and extremely cheap LM358. The latter can suffice in many cases. For instance, LM358 is being used even by Intel in some computer motherboards. Perhaps it's still early to write this device off.
