Zener diodes are p-n junctions semiconductor and never assume that a small signal diode is a Zener diode. To know about it observe the marking on the main board and read the diode part number which refers to the semiconductor book.

A Zener diode is a diode which allows current to flow in the forward direction in the same manner as an ideal diode, but will also permit it to flow in the reverse direction when the voltage is above a certain value known as the breakdown voltage, zener knee voltage, zener voltage or avalanche point.

Zener diodes are a special type of semiconductor diode– devices that allow current to flow in one direction only –that also allow current to flow in the opposite direction, but only when exposed to enough voltage. And while that sounds a bit esoteric, they’re actually among the handiest components ever to cross an engineer’s bench, providing great solutions to a number of common needs in circuit design.
Thanks!!!
