Build your own flexible & easy to built Atmel 89 series flash programmer.
This programmer was designed in view of to be flexible, economical and easy to built, the programmer hardware utilizes the standard TTL series parts and no special components are used. The programmer is interfaced with the PC parallel port and there is no special requirement for the PC parallel port, so the older computers can also be used with this programmer.
IntroductionDevices
The programmer software supports the following Atmel devicesNote: For 20 pin devices a simple interface adapter is required.
AT89C51 AT89C1051
AT89C52 AT89C1051U
AT89C55 AT89C2051
AT89S53 AT89C4051
AT89S8252
AT89C55WD
The AT89C55WD has been included for testing purpose.Hardware
Figure 1 shows the circuit diagram of the Flash Programmer, the programmer is interfaced with the standard parallel port of the PC. As shown in the diagram U1 is used to control the data flow between controller and the PC, U3 latched the low order address byte and U4 latched the high order address byte, while U2 is used to generate the control signals for micro controller to be programmed. The power supply section uses U6 to generate the logic 5V supply while the U5 is used to provide the programming supply voltage to controller. The power to the circuit is provided by a wall adapter of 15 to 18V output, normally a 15V type adapter will provide a 19~20V output voltage. As shown in the diagram the crystal X1 can be replaced by a resonator in that case capacitors C4 and C5 are not required, the pcb has the provision for both type of devices.
For the adjustment of P1 and P2 follow the steps shown below,
1. First adjust P1 to get the 12.75V at the output of LM317L regulator, make sure transistor T4 is off or
temporarily connect the T4 base to ground.
2. Now temporarily short the collector of transistor T4 to ground.
3. Adjust P2 to get the 12.0V at the output of LM317L regulator.

Constructing the Board
The prototype board may be built using universal PCB with point-to-point wiring. If you want to make your own PCB, download the Pcbs.zip file which contains the printer files for the laser printer or download the PcbsGif.zip file which contains Gif format pcb files. Figure 3 shows the parts layout of the programmer pcb.
For printing the files on laser printer use the following dos command, this will print the all pcb files.COPY *.PRN PRN/B
For the bill of material of the project view the file Pgm89Bom.txt
The schematics and the pcbs of the project were designed using OrCAD software.

Software
Pgm89w.zip file is used to run the programmer. This is a Windows program which can be used under Windows 95/98/ME but not in windows NT. The main screen of the program is shown in figure 4.Following are the main features of this software,
Note: In order to insure safe insertion & removal of the u-controller from programmer ZIF socket make sure programmer power supply is turned on before starting the program and the red LED D2 must be turned off when the program is started. The u-controller should be placed or removed from the ZIF socket when the red LED D2 is off.Read and Write the Intel Hex File Read Chip info Clear, Fill & Edit Program Buffer Verify with Program Buffer Reload current Hex File Display Data Checksum Program selected Lock Bits & ISP fuse Parallel Port Selection LPT1, 2 & 3
Also note that the software does not provide the erase command because this function is performed automatically during device programming. If you are required to erase the controller first use the clear buffer command in edit menu then program the controller, this will erase the controller memory.

Ming An from Jakarta (Indonesia) provides a PCB file, AT89C0000.PCB for Khan's Programmer.Contribution work for Khan's Programmer
It was a Single Side PCB for M Asim Khan's Programmer
This PCB is smaller than original size, only about 10 x 11 cm. No any changes in schematic side but some changes in PCB level.
There are :
1. I added a Switch On/Off for power supply (can bypass if you don't want it).
2. DB25 male became DB25 Female
3. No more adapter for At89cx051 required but K1 and K2 can be stacked together as one.
(No need Textool socket)
4. Have wire jumper about 16 pcs on component side.
