cangaate, You cannot produce an LCD display from house hold parts. LCD displays have quite an architecture on-board. However, if you are wanting to make some type of character display of your own, you could produce similar results by making a LED display.
Below, I have posted a drawing of a simple 4X4 LED matrix. By controlling which X lines have ground and which Y lines have a voltage, you can light the different LEDs. Add more LEDs as needed for a larger display. If you need more control than this, you can use individual LEDs instead of a matrix.
