Well commutating circuits r used for ac as well...
if we want only a lil part of the phase to coduct to the load .. we wud need the commutation circuit.. wudnt we ??

well u cud u use a better , laser do move a long distance .. and considering the width of a car .. i dont think that it cud create a problem .. the prob cud be with ur receiver ..
i made some circuit a long time back .. and it cud work on a range of 15-20 feets ..

Guyz using the ttl ic's is fine .. y dont u se use .. cmos is cd4033 .. it has a decade counter as well as the o/p for 7 seg dislpay built in an 16 dip ..
wud'nt that reduce the complexity of the design
