I did but the post was more for the purpose of sharing a solution for those who may be googling this later. These trimmers are still sold and still common.
I had this same issue. I plugged it straight into the 220v outlet. When I turned it on it ran like a raped ape for 1/2 second and popped. The issue with mine was the resistor had blown. The resistor was a 150ohm with 10% tolerance. Hope this helps.
