    You cannot check a diode with the resistance test, you have to have a diode scale to indicate the volt drop across it. There is not enough forward bias current on Ohms range, unless it is a moving coil meter. There are also spark gaps that resemble those. M.

    I would guess it could be one or more of the mosfets of the 6 on the heatsink if the transformer fuse blew.. The plate you mention contains the magnets that the wound poles interact with. M.

    The batteries usually used in RC are LiPo technology. The systems are usually almost plug and play. Probabally most of the items sources cheap in N.A. are Chinese origin. I can see if I can come up with a couple of links. M.

    Have you looked at RC components? Motors, servo, 2.4Ghz transmitters/receivers are so cheap it is not worth building anything like this, unless there are other factors not stated? M.

    Maxim has quite a selection for a RS485 Transceivers. I have not used Arduino, but I have used the Modbus protocol with Pic's. so I can't help you there, are you familiar with the Modbus master/slave protocol? M.

    Google brings up that one purpose is grid resistors and one use is in motor speed controllers as in wound rotor motor rpm control on cranes etc, a once very common method. M.

    They resemble regenerative motor braking resistors around 1-2Kw? Especially as no voltage is shown. Or could be elements, if that is Nichrome. M.

    If you come up with a voltage regulator for 24vdc output, 40va each is pushing it for 3amp out. M.
