    Using a Universal motor you need a Triac (dimmer type) controller for speed control, when reversing a universal motor you have to reverse the series field WRT the armature. These are all integral in the drill switch, the Triac is often mounted separately on a heat sink. M.

    The E is sometimes used in place of R after a resistance value. The SI or world International Standards indicates R as their standard. Main thing is consistency and not mixing in a particular DWG or schematic. M.

    I have one of those RC current power testers, they just go in series with the Li-Po (12v?) battery power and motor as he was using the Li-po to power the motor. M.

    I will do a test on mine and see what it draws in fact when stalled, I would not be surprised if most hand drills do not have some kind of current limit, as per most specs. In theory the maximum current of a DC motor is full voltage and stalled by load. M.

    Obviously the right path to take is do an empirical test of the motor using the Auto battery, I would be very surprised if it were to draw more current than in the hand tool! M.

    Ampacity of 8awg is 50amps at 75°C, shouldn't even come close to this with a Cordless drill. I would be inclined to use 14g or 12g tops. M.

    In N.A. NFPA79 and NFPA70 (NEC) both specify 15a for 14g or 20a in a control enclosure. It is a few decades since I dealt with British regs, but it has to be close. M.
