    Blown up two laptops

yeah, my understanding is it runs at 12Mbps? I would only be using it as an interface between my laptop and a cnc laser machine, biggest file I have is 2MB so I'm guessing it won't be a bottle neck?

    Blown up two laptops

thanks for the advice folks, much appreciated. I live in the UK so would one of these offer sufficient protection against future problems? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184440645025?hash=item2af184e5a1:g:ge0AAOSwm9xfWSPk

    Blown up two laptops

Okay, so I'm working on a cnc control board project with the Espduino 32 bit board and a cnc shield. Everything is okay, I have stepper motors running as they should and all is gravy. Then, working away I notice the psu for the cnc shield has the power led flashing, my laptop screen blurs and...

    Desktop cnc laser 32bit upgrade

Hi,, I have the generic Chinese cnc laser which comes with an 8 bit controller running grbl 1.1. I would like to upgrade the machine to 32 bit but there is a lack of outright cnc laser boards which are 32 bit. There is one on the Ortur but to be honest it is not appealing as the stepper driver...

    Any guitar builders on here?

First of all I'm not a musician, I can't play the guitar, but I have a yen to build a 3 string fretless bass guitar of the "shovel" variety or some such heresy. I plan to use some of an old pitch pine pew for neck and body but am totally in the dark as to wiring the damned thing. I've had a look...

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

Interesting. You mean like this thing? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GLOWWORM-BRITISH-GAS-BG330-BOILER-IGNITER-IGNITION-TRANSFORMER-0020020763/292305126737?epid=645588802&hash=item440ebe4551:g:q10AAOSwE-lZ7fsJ

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

Just as a further queestion as I am no further with this due to other more pressing concerns but would a T1D6 rectified power supply do the trick putting out 5v at 4A?

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

thank you for such a comprehensive reply. I guess I have a choice to make regarding "toy" or "serious" and seeing as this is a project for the near future (many other more important things to finish yet) I have time to ruminate on it. If you or someone could provide a circuit diagram for such a...

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

Hi and thank you for your reply. I have no actual components yet, I'm merely trying to discern what I need. I lean towards a battery operated version as there is no requirement for PAT testing if I use it in public. I plan to encase the electrodes in glass so they are effectively isolated from...

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

Thank you gentlemen perhaps I misunderstood your question regarding voltage. The 12v I was referring to was the input voltage, there are a number of youtube videos showing small devices being run from a 9v battery or 4 1.5v batteries. They use something like this...

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

First, how many volts will you use for your Jacob's Ladder? I probably won't go above 12v due to the size restrictions - hence no need for a huge arc. What is the maximum arc length you anticipate between the electrodes? Something around 2cm or bigger would be nice How will you initiate the...

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

Brilliant. Is it appropriate to ask for a circuit diagram or link to one please?

    Fixed interval Jacob's Ladder?

Bit of a strange one but I would like to make a battery powered Jacob's Ladder or even have it run off a step down transformer. Apparently part of the circuit responsible burns out if run continuously. What would be useful would be the ability to switch the current on and off at a suitable...

    Possible switch overload?

thank you gents for your patience dealing with a rank amateur who seems to have had his moron head on when he thought this post up (I was tired at the time). I have since ordered a mains capable toggle switch and will use this to control the power to the circuit, don't know what I was thinking...

    Possible switch overload?

the switch only needs to be spst because it will control the current to both led cobs which will either be both "on" or both "off". even though the switch is rated 12v it has current handling capaccity of 20A. the larger cob is 20-40v but only 0.6A, is this then likely to cause damage to the switch?

    Possible switch overload?

I've bought a toggle switch which I intend to use to control the output from two led drivers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-ILLUMINATED-LED-ON-OFF-TOGGLE-SPST-SWITCH-AIRCRAFT-MISSILE-FLIP-UP-COVER-CAR/281145655206?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=580343948971&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 The...

Difficulty measuring forward voltage for a LED

I have a couple of LED's, both 12 volt or so and one is in fact a 3w cluster. I was toying with the idea of running one of them off a 12v battery but need to calculate the resistor value I would need, and for this I need the forward voltage. I got my multimeter out, which I admit is a cheapie...

How to power one or two of these clusters

Hi dave9 and thanks for your reply. The project is a bit of steampunk upcycling, I'll post a picture if ever I get it working. In the end I settled for this cob...

How to power one or two of these clusters

cheers mate. the cob will be attached to a large metal food mincer, weight about 5-8lb and have air clearance around it. I've ordered some thermal adhesive to affix a cob to the vertical surface it is intended for. I assume the earth point on the cob is a matter of attaching an earth wire with a...
