steven, it has three legs on each end, and its like an inductor. It looks as though there's a medal rod passing through the centre that is connected to the centre leg at each end. The two outer legs at each end are connected to the inductor coils.

Hi Guys,

I am fairly sure this is a relay.
The kind with a glass tube in the middle!

Thanks, yes that's what they are :D. They will be very useful. Any idea on the power they can handle, and the type of applications they are used for, basically why would you use one of these instead of a relay?.

:) actually i wonder if a relay unit out of a car would do ok , or even a truck, and maybe if you allso need a regulator i wonder if you can use the one from a car alternator

Dazza,

The switch contacts are hermetically sealed so it will not ignite hydrogen ;D and also they are protected from dust. If you can find the manufacturer and some numbers you might be able to identify its rating.
