diffusing led's

Application - instrument panel lighting.

I have some led's of the right colour but they are normal ones that have a
narrow angle. I'd like to have a more diffuse glow.

Filing the end of the led flat doesn't do much.

The next thing I was thinking of was drilling a bunch of holes in clear
acrylic, inserting the led's, and roughenng the surface.

Doing all that is more work than typing, so in the sprit of looking for an
alrady-invented wheel, does any know of a good method for diffusing the
beam(s)?

Hi,

Kingbright make a heap of LEDs with diffused flat ends.
3, 4 & 5mm dia.
Absolutely perfect for front panels.

Here's a product we make that uses them.

I even had them make me some 3mm flat end blue.

Why not buy ones that are designed to be diffuse ? The flat top type with a
'matt' surface.

Although I haven't tried it myself yet, a magazine (Silicon Chip)
recommended filing the end of the LED down to 4 flat faces, like a
square-based pyramid. This was specifically to diffuse the light.
