what is the true table for a dpdt switch.  it has  on-off-on , 6 terminals

            1 o      o  4

            2 o      o  5

            3 o      o  6

Pins 2 and 5 control the switch??

First of all it's Double Pole Double Throw. A Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) would only have pins 1,2,3.

The signal you connect to pin 2 will be routed to pin 1 when you put the switch to one ON position and to pin 3 at the other ON position. When it's at the OFF position pin 2 won't be connected to anything.

All that times two for the other pins. Actually it's like having two SPDT switches side by side.
