Have a good sized array of HDD's supporting a recent Intellex v3.1 install.

30 days into operation starting to experience HDD failures - anyone having
similar experiences ??

Would this be similar to the nightmare experienced a year or so ago with
IBM's "Death-Star" or Maxtor's high capacity drive problems ??

I use nothing but Maxtor drives. Only had one fail in 10 years...I bought it
new on ebay and it wasn't packed very well. I shipped it back to Maxtor
(still under warranty), and they replaced it free...

Western Digital drives have one of the highest failure rates I have ever
seen to date...I have been working on computers since 1986.

I have a friend in NYC that once owned a computer store...He had boxes of
dead Western Digital & Seagate drives...maybe one or two Maxtor RLL or MFM
drives...but that was all...

In my desk drawer I have 6 dead drives...2 are seagate...1 is a TEAC, and
the other
3???? You guessed it! WESTERN DIGITAL! :)

Must have something to do with the power y'all have in Floridee... I've
never had a Western Digital or Quantum drive fail in the years I've been
building computers. Maxtor's another matter. I do have to admit it looks
like their quality has improved since they acquired Quantum, and the
wholesaler I deal with has some pretty tempting offers. Might be time to
put a couple of Maxtor drives "through their paces"... :))

My desktop has twin 160GB Maxtors that never get any rest. Not a bad sector
to be found anywhere...not even a hickup...Windows OS is another matter...
:) I have been running Windows XP Pro Corporate Edition for the past 4
years...Though I can still crash programs with the best of em...Windows XP
has never given me too much trouble. Reminds me of Windows 3.1...Bill Gates
should have quit while he was ahead... :)

i ve change about 50% of all the maxtor drive installed in dvr or computer
the we sold to customer..

i had 3 maxtor drive 2x40 gig 1x120 gig changed at home all on rma from
maxtor at least they do give a good service on parts replacement

and my brother lots both of his 120 gig in one week...the problem is the
drive cause his casing has enough ventilation in it that you cant find a
single bit of dust inside..its all blown away...2 fan providing intake one
from the front one from the side, and 3 fan for outtake one on the power
supply and 2 in the back (its a full tower) and the power supply have a 2
fan..one inside the the casing pulling air to the power supply and the one
in the back of the power supply to output it ...

in the mean time we had western digital drive that didnt faild too much (but
i had less in the field)

Thx for the candid comments.

These are being used 24/7 for DVR recording.

When Maxtor first introduced the 100GB drives, I replaced most of them
within the first 6 months. Problem was that on the fly, controller would
arbitrarily write to the drive without reading to see what it was doing -
sort of not looking before you leaping. Problem initially thought to be the
RTO/S (not Windoz) but turned out to be the IDE controller card was
possessed. Without too much arm twisting Maxtor, accommodated by replacing
the HDD's.

They may be OK for conventional workstation use, however have an unnerving
view on the majority of continuous duty HDD's out there. Anyone make a
mil-spec'd drive - related to a Timex watch ???

Same here, have one of those drives in each machine as well as a 120. also a
120 in a USB case that are all running 24/7. Previously I was using Seagate
Barracudas, had 2 of those fail on me but I bought them used in the first
place

IBM does although I'm certain they don't actually *manufacturer* the drive
(they have it branded)...

Yea Toshiba makes a very small hard drive currently used in the mini Ipod
however I don't think its designed for seriously heavy duty use, not sure
tho

Thx Bob - you know - the thought flashed through one side of my head and
right out the other side. Duh !

I think this is a very valid point. Will also check to see if the processor
runs a trend log which also measures internal temperature along with the
other geez-whiz data - correlate it to the failures .....

Really appreciate the tip .... regards, Hj

almost 50% have had hard drives fail within 90days
At my last contact with American Dynamics on this problem they faulted
Maxtor with bad Quality Control
