In our guest bathroom we have one of those old-fashioned small cans, into which we dispose bathroom tissues and whatnot into a liner made from a plastic grocery bag. The liner fits snugly inside the small can, which has a toe-operated foot lever to flip open the top. As the Brits say, "Works like a treat." We also have two tall kitchen garbage cans: one for recyclable glass, paper, aluminum foil, etc.; another with an expandable draw-string liner for kitchen and general house trash. Neither of the tall boys in the kitchen have lids, but we empty them daily into lidded trash cans stored outside near one of our rear screened lanais. The only infrared sensors in sight are the PIR sensors on the outdoor floodlights. The neigborhood racoon loves those.

No contact means no bacteria means no infections especially for those who have an compromised immune system or someone taking care of somebody with a compromised immune system. From personal experience foot pedals are made for people with small feet I keep jamming my toe on it because that's the only thing that will fit. And even then your timings got to be perfect I almost poked my eyeball out trying to throw away a nail, it ricocheted off the lid... "man... that stings."

Our kids had to get rid of their electronic trash can in the kitchen, because their dogs would cause it to open as they walked by, allowing them to feast on whatever was in the can.

Trash cans, especially if used in the kitchen to dispose food, absolutely need a lid to prevent houseflies from laying eggs and procreating more flies on the rotting food (if someone forgets to take the trash out daily). My wife has a compromised immune system (Lupus), so I have to try to remember to take the trash out every single day. That is becoming more difficult as my dementia increases.
