Looking for circuit design ideas

To do this without IC i.e. Integrated Circuits implies you want to just use
transistors and diodes. I used to design things like that back in the early
60's. I estimate it would take a couple of cabinets 7 ft high and 2 ft wide
to hold all of the components.

Maybe you meant without using a microprocessor - just using logic ICs - more
doable but still daunting maybe only a box 15 in high by 19 in wide by 17in
deep.

I am not much of an EE, so please pardon my ignorance.

I am looking for one of those "do-it-urself" simple, easy methods of
PCB circuitry. I remember seeing kits and engineers doing such stuff
themselves (make radios, buzzers, etc.) Anything that is small sized
and easy to do, without the need for multi-million $ fabs.

How about:

Punch holes in the pages of the puzzle books to allow a system like a
Jacqard loom to work some internal mechanical counters.
