Mouser overcharging on shipping?

Hi - I dunno if any of you remember me posting a couple days back about
looking to get a couple parts really really quickly. Anyways - I ordered 3
1/4W potentiometers (at $1.20 each) through them with UPS 2 day air. So -
here's Mouser's shipping prices: http://www.mouser.com/?
handler=shippinginfo You would expect I'd probably be charged the minimum
price listed under 1 pound for 2 day air right? Since it would be a small
package weighing almost nothing? Wrong! I was charged $12.44! I called them
up and they said that those are approximations for shipping - but somehow I
kinda feel like I was wronged here. I'm calling up the manager tomorrow -
but in the meantime - I just felt I should warn everyone to watch your bill
from Mouser - in case this is common.

$12.44 is exactly the price that the UPS website gives (for a shipment
to a residential address). It would be $16.09 if they'd dropped it off
at a retail location. They can't possibly make any money on a $3.60 US
order, please try to avoid placing such orders.

Yeah actually I placed a big order the day before - realized I had made a
mistake - and then called them to change it and they were like "too late -
sucks for you".

I still point to their website which says "$7.31 to $10.35" for 1 pound.
Maybe they haven't updated that for like 10 years? Whichever way - that is
misleading - and is their mistake.

If you got this upset over some little thing like this at a restaurant,
they'd drop your food on the kitchen floor and then put it back on your
plate. Sometimes it's better to let things go, and get on with the important
things in life. Is your time so cheap that you can afford to haggle with
Mouser over one or two dollars?

It's not the money - it's just the idea that they lied on their website
then had the never to say that it was a "approximation" when now as Sphero
points out it's not even possible to ship anything that cheaply. It just
tells me that I'll be shopping at Digi Key a hell of a lot more from now
on. They forgot that "the customer is always right" and were downright rude
to me on the phone.

You have a problem understanding " To get exact shipping charges go to:
www.ups.com or www.fedex.com, (Our zip code is 76063.)" at the top of
the page? Mouser states "no handling charge" for UPS- so the invoice S&H
line should exactly equal the UPS site charge- be sure to weigh your
little box of goodies first. You have a bit more work to do before you
can make your claims-and your post is well within character of your
other postings- idiotic and contentious.

Michael

If you verbally communicate the way you post, it is a tribute to near
monumental civility and patience on the part of Mouser that they didn't
just hang-up on your third grunt...

My last shipment from Mouser cost about $2, just specify First Class
mail (not Express mail) for you shipping option. Mouser is one of the
few distributors with this option.

Yeah, and then you can pay DigiKey $5 more because your order was less than
$25.

Shipping & handling charges are a well known method of overcharging.
Mouser definitely is in good company on that count.

In my experience, 2nd Day and Next Day Air are two more good ways to
minimize any savings one might otherwise realize. 2nd Day means "two
days after we ship"; problem is, some outfits sit in la-la land for days
on end before passing an order to the shipper. Result: your Next Day
Air can arrive a week or even more after you order it.

It takes dynamite to get me away from specifying Ground shipping. Even
then, disappointment frequently visits itself on my orders. Two weeks
ago I had one pound shipped Ground from CA to NY. Cost was between $12
and $13 as I recall and it took 9 (nine) days for the silly box to
arrive. Half a cubic foot of cardboard box, zillions of styrofoam
peanuts, ..... and 24 cubic inches of product. (sigh)

With 25 years in the industry of which the last 15 have been my own
business, I have tried ALL the vendors. Recently, we canceled our
Jameco, Digikey, Newark, and AllPhase agreements and switched
EVERYTHING to Mouser, although we maintain a few accounts elsewhere so
we're not single sourced.

I can order direct from Asia for a huge savings, but the customer
support and timeliness of delivery do not justify this, so everything
comes through Mouser. Specifically, Donna Fender is the sales person
at Mouser that we always ask for. While everyone at Mouser has
treated us like royalty, Donna goes the extra mile. It doesn't matter
the size of my order or how often I order, Donna makes sure we get the
best prices available and in EVERY circumstance where I reported I
could get a better price, Donna has been sure to match other vendors
prices and in some cases, beat them.

Shipping fees have been flat rated for us for years, Donna sees to
that. Recently, an order we placed which included 1100 triacs was
miscounted and we were shorted 14 pieces. Not only did Donna send us
those pieces with NO shipping charge, but she also determined that we
had overpaid (we would not have caught it) and sent us a refund check,
not store credit.

Mouser has the best customer service, is the most willing to extend
themselves beyond the normal routine of business, and has watched out
for my companies best interests. Donna Fender herself has performed
the most arduous tasks for us, above and beyond the scope of her
employment, and Mouser Administration has been notified of this.

If you're having a problem with Mouser, I'd suggest that it is you
that is the problem. I've never done business with any company that
was as supportive.

It could have been worse: the product might have arrived in the form of

Well - in their defense - they shipped within about two hours of me placing
the order. Normally they take about 24 hours - if I had known they were
going to ship that day I would have used a cheaper shipping option. Oh
well.

Normally my orders are between $50-100 (I like to wait a while between
orders to save on shipping) - it's just that this time I accidentally
forgot about something - and they weren't willing to try to change my order
which hadn't shipped yet.

I have been very pleased with Mouser. Once they were backordered on a
DGS -0179 power jack. $1.15 + $0.09 tax. When their stock arrived,
they shipped it. Their email shipping invoice says "no charge" on
shipping. The credit card statement has a charge from them that day
of $1.24.

They did screw up a 2 row, 7 socket per row, 14 socket total part. I
got a 2 row, 14 socket per row, 28 socket total part. I called, they
pulled up my invoice and they had someone go to the bin and physically
check. They very openly said it was their mistake, they would order
the correct part, and I could do whatever was my pleasure --- return
the wrong part, order the correct part then and there on the phone.

They must have spent 15 or 20 minutes with me making it correct. Both
they and I are clearly placing high value on correctness in their
database, but this make me more likely to future business with them.

When I have placed orders, they have never specified shipping at the
time I close the order. I was suprised once myself with some $20 or
$30 shipping charge, but when I checked it was all pass through stuff
from UPS.

I do have a lot of grumbling about UPS. When I taught on a 1 year
appointment in Minnesota, I shipped all my technical books to the
University from Austin. Some of my books were broken during the
shipment. I had not known it was even possible to break books. I
worked my way through college on shipping docks at several businesses
in Texas, packing, loading and unloading trucks, and I know how stuff
is really handled, and my books were packed just fine.

My daughter went to Pilchuk and shipped some of her hand blown glass
back to me. We saw the driver and were walking to the door. We saw
and heard him throw it, break the glass, and run without ringing the
doorbell.

My experience with many deliveries from Digikey is that items ordered for
next-day delivery arrive the next day.
