I bought a batch of MPf102's off of Ebay to put into some LFO's I've been building. Got the LFO's working apart from the ramp/saw and square sections which followed a pair of MPf102's. Spent quite a while being baffled but managed to narrow the Problem down to the pair of MPF102's, surely enough I changed them to another pair I had and the LFO worked as it was meant to.

So as I'm building ten of the same circuit i thought I'd build a second LFO but use another pair from the rogue batch, to test if I had done something wrong or if it was the components. Same thing happened again, got new MPF102's today from Soundtronics, replaced them and the LFO worked as it should.

Do others think that I was sold a rogue batch?

The rogue components are labeled as FBK15 MPF102, maybe there's a different type of MPF102 I don't know about

Difficult to say - there are some valid reasons to believe that the 'fake component' rumours are true but unless you test each and every device that comes in BEFORE using it you will never really know.

I take in loads of parts over the course of a year and never do any tests - I could be sitting on the most expensive pile of cr@p in existence but that's the risk I take! I've actually only had one occasion to complain and that was when I ordered some PLL devices and, when I received them, two were 'pulls' (working) from old pcbs! Cheeky so-and-so's! The others may well have been taken from sockets for all I know (they looked ok though) and the suppliers were quick enough to refund me so.....meh.

The sellers on ebay go to the garbage bins at the back of Chinese manufactures and take the defective parts that were thrown away and sell them on ebay. Some Chinese manufacturers copy a Western part but get the pins sequence wrong.

fair do's, I bought them as I needed them cheaper, but lesson learned I guess as had to wait longer to build and cost me more money.

Fake/rogue Component sounds JG Ballard-esque

They must make a LOT of boo-boos.
