OK, so I know it's old technology, but does anyone remember what would
cause flutter (music becomes distorted when moving the Walkman) in one
of these and how to fix it?

Thanks

Inertia of the flywheel. Can't fix it AFAIK. That's why CD players have the
delayed audio system.

I never noticed any perceptible distortion with cassette walkmans, perhaps
the belt is worn and slipping?

Depends on how much you shake or twist them! When Wal-Mart sell them for $5
it's hard to get keen on fixing them.

Flutter is caused by:
1. Rotten rubber drive belt (might look fine, isn't). Replace

2. Bad pinch-roller bearing. Lubricate or replace.

3. Bad capstan & flywheel bearing. Lubricat or replace the whole
thing...these are not normally replacable (staked to the chassis or molded-in).
