My old car passed the emissions test. But when I drove away I floored it which left the testing place filled with too rich black smoke!

Oxygen senser feedback is disabled while engine is still cold or full-throttle operation. Max power requires a rich mixture.

No, I don't drive a stinky, noisy diesel. It was a '75 Volkswagen Rabbit. It was made for California with a deluxe catalytic converter that lasted only a couple of months. It frequently backfired which broke the catalytic and the mechanics did not know why. Sometimes it made black smoke and other times it backfired.

Stinky and noisy diesels?...  Must be a long time since you seen or heard a diesel car, just about when that Rabbit of yours was new!

A neighbour has a new Volvo diesel powered car. It stinks and makes a noisy racket like an old Ford truck. Hey, it doesn't smoke.

There is a perfectly logical explanation for this: Volvo is since a few yers completely owned by Ford!  ;D
