RCA VCR clock problem

RCA VCR model #625-VLT

Clock/counter no longer works/lights up. Unable to program VCR. What
is causing this problem and how do I fix it? (could problem be from a
fuse that burnt out?). Rest of VCR works fine (play, FF, Rewind etc)

There was a parts kit available to repair this particular problem with the
older RCA Vcrs, can't recall the part number or if it is even available any
more. Involved repairing the DC-DC circuit that supplied current to the
florescent display.

The part you need to fix this older VCR is NLA. When it was available in
the late 80's the DC/DC converter module was about $20 back then.
Look around at garage sales or thrift stores..... you might be able to buy
a similar VCR (RCA, Hitachi or Sears branded) that you can scavenge the part
from. There is no "work around" with generic components so you really
need the correct part to perform the repair.

Is it more than a DC source? If not, you could always just build a little
power supply to sub for the DC-DC converter.

The little silver box ( dc-dc converter) and some caps are the most likely
problem. I think I have some still in stock BUT I don't know the part number
you need. I think there were a couple different ones. If you get the part
number contact me by email as I really don't get to this newsgroup often at

The RCA# is/was 163818, we used hundreds of those kits.

If there were others, the caps included were probably different but that
square silver box was always the same from what I remember. The replacements
had heat sinks soldered on the top from the originals.
