Hi everyone,

I have done a lot of research into building a CNC plasma cutting table and before I start buying anything I just wanted some advice on whether the rack and pinion I have chosen is a good fit.

The gantry I plan to build will weigh between 30 and 50 kg. I plan to use a 1.5 tooth rack and pinion and a 40 tooth pinion. Based on my calculations this means the pinion should move 60 mm or 2.36 inches per revolution.

I have chosen the following stepper motor: https://www.oyostepper.es/category-26-b0-Motorreductores.html

I will be using a 60 V power supply so based on my calculations this means the motor will give me 483 RPM. I will be using a 5:1 reduction ratio to increase torque and precision and the large 40 tooth pinion will give me the maximum. The travel speed is 300 RPM, 5803 mm or 228 inches per minute, and the step is (0.06 mm).

My questions are:
- Is my calculation of 228 inches per minute correct?
- Is it sufficient for cutting 1.6 mm and thicker materials?
- Is the step accuracy of 0.06 mm sufficient for CNC plasma cutting?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
