VEHICLE COUNTER/SENSOR

Our thesis project is entitled Intelligent Traffic Light Controller.
Our professors approved it but they want it to be tested in actual.

So the problem now is the sensors to be used in measuring the number of vehicles in each lane.
Do you have any suggestions guys?
Or anyone of you knows someone who can make this sensor?

You could count the cars gong past the sensor.

I know the following are used as sensors:
Pressure switch.
Metal detector.
Radar.

In more sparsely populated areas each traffic light system will have its own PLC, in more urban areas all the traffic lights, will all be connected to one computer.
