Mrs Moderator has a small CD player that she uses all the time. It has been plugged in continuously and doesn't really have an OFF switch. Lately it has been having some trouble playing some CDs, although the radio functions perfectly.
Tonight Mrs Moderator asked if she should just buy a new one, so naturally I said I would open it up and take a look.
Absolute carnage inside!
I initially estimated that at least one third of the electrolytic capacitors have vomited forth their contents.
Excuse the poor photography, the light in here is not real good.
Aside from a single filter capacitor, I can't imagine that many of these had an electrically hard life.

Now, the CD player is the only thing affected, there is no hum on the radio which is surprising if all these capacitors have died.
But I noticed that there were no domed tops, and where the stuff flowed seemed strange (the photo is taken from what would be underneath the board.
OK, the ESR of the filter cap is 0.05 ohms.
Look at the board again...
What I had initially assumed to be electrolyte is simply some goo poured over the capacitors to stop them from vibrating (I presume).
So I reassemble, wipe the lens of the CD player with a small paintbrush and...
It works again.
