Gikfun 8x8x8 Blue led build

I built this project but when I tried to fire it up I got some flickering on random leds depending on which pattern the controller was sending out. I started trying to troubleshoot buy swapping shift registers around (same exact problem). Then I turned off, took all 8 out, and started adding one at a time. I can get 6 to work perfectly, but if I put the chip in either of the other 2 slots the problem comes back. So 2 of my 64 leds plains do dot work. I tried resoldering everything (no luck). Any ideas would be appreciated?

It usually comes down to basic soldering/construction errors though.

I tested all LED plains before soldering them in. I guess I should have inserted one set for each channel first. Now it is too late.
