I have a small plug-in-supply unit with "220V ac 50Hz" input and "12V rms" output. It is an italian device called "Transformatore elettronico" and the weight is only 70 grams. So it is kind of switched power supply - however with an ac output.
It is intended to drive a halogen lamp. However, from time to time it fails (light on/off for several seconds or even minutes).
My question: Does anybody know how the waveform and the frequency looks like for such a off-the-shelf device?

Do you have the correct wattage halogen bulb fitted? If you fit one that is too high powered the power units will overheat and cycle on-off as the protection circuitry kicks in.

Hi LVW
Not sure if this helps but it has the same name as you have given. One way I guess is to take it apart and see if the circuit looks similar

Adam - thank you so much. I am pretty sure that you have sent me on the right track.
The discussion as shown in the referenced link - and in particular, an application note contained in one of the contributions - is very helpful. So I think, my question has been answered.
Thank you again.
