I bought a motorised cam without its transformer. It is rated at 5v dc 2A. The nearest transformer I have is 5.99v 2A. Can I assume that I must match the voltage exactly and 5.99v risks damaging the cam?

Make/model/link to item? The 5V seems 'suspicious' - does it have any controlling electronics inside?

A 'cam' is an irregularly shaped disk usually used to operate movement. This ridiculous shortening of CAMERA to cam is misleading hence my request for further information.

As it stands you will need a 5V 2A power pack. Anything other than 5V will likely damage that camERA.

Why would you purchase it WITHOUT a transformer anyway?

It was very discounted from a reputable shop and I can take it back if it does not work.

I have been looking for a switch mode charger. Is that overkill and so should i settle for an ordinary charger?

A transformer produces AC that is completely different from the DC needed by the camera.
The DC must have a connector with the correct + and - polarity.

5VDC/2A is no problem. The correct connector with the 5VDC wall wart will be more of an issue.
