CD Player Won't read disc #2

Except that dont love tech. Unless its old tech. Vast majority of my stuff is on vinyl. Im still fixing it if at all possible.

I agree I am having trouble with 2 of my stereo systems one older and one newer. The older one is a CMT MX500I Micro Shelf System With Ipod Dock and is very nostalgic and sentimental to me however the newer one is a ONN CD Mini Stereo System with Bluetooth Wireless Technology and is not too valuable and is replaceable. Whenever I insert a disc into the Sony player it takes about 2-3 minutes to stop spinning and finally displays a message on the screen saying that there is no disc inside. When I put a disc in the newer system it will read the disc show how many songs there are on the disc and will let me play the first 20-30 seconds of the first song then will stop start reading the disc again and will continue this process over and over. I don't know what I am doing I am sort of a newcomer in the world of radios and would appreciate some help from people who know what to do. If there is anything not listed in this strand of messages that anybody recommends please reply, Thank You.

Try cleaning the CD carrier disc, this one:

with alcohol (IPA) and a cotton swab. It helped me in a few cases. If the carrier doesn't have a good grip on the CD, the disc will spin but will not come up to the rated speed. Then the player is not able to read the disc.

You can also try to clean the laaser lens, this one:

But be very, very careful: the lens is mounted on a moveable jig which is versy sensible. Only touch the lens very lightly.

Let the alcohol evaporate completely before resuming operation.

Time to dig deep and get a new one/two.
Not a job for a newbie ....actually not a job for most qualified repairers these days.
Simply not economical/possible to repair/replace laser read heads.

It's not yet clear that the laser is defect. It may simply be dirty from years of use.

For sony system, disk motor (does not rotate quick enough, needs about 500rpm) or laser pickup unit could be the problem.
Can you check the pickup type? Something like KSS-xxx or KSM-xxx. Often cheap clones are avaliable.


Second system maybe has an issue with pickup unit tracking. There are 2 systems keeping track on the disc. A magnetic field that holds the pickup lens (focus and tracking) and a (spindle-)drive that does the main pickup feed from inside to outside while playing.
20 to 30 seconds on inner track can be held by the magnetic correction, if the spindle does not move the pickup outward, it hangs after that time.
Also title skip forward will fail, pickup does not move i suppose.

Check the tracking mechanism for old grease, broken gear wheels. Check motor for spindle drive and motor supply, inner position switch.
You can also carefully move the pickup spindle outwards (e.g. middle disc position) and watch if it goes back to center position when the drive is initialised.

So I found the type it is KHM-313CAA and as mentioned before there are many options on Ebay and other websites, however I'm wondering would the new one still function as well as the original one should have? I am also wondering if there are other types that will work, if you could get back to me as soon as possible with those answers I would very much appreciate it. Thank you and Happy New Year!

So after a couple of different tests I've come to the conclusion that the motor is not spinning fast enough to get the disc up to its full rpms, however I would like to do one more test and see if it is a combination of things including the laser not moving and other minor things, before I do that I was wondering if it would be more cost efficient to just replace the the pickup unit as a whole instead of fixing each problem individually, thank you for your time and effort.
