I think I understand what you mean by "displaying the X and Y values." Would the operator simply see two sets of numbers each representing the X and the Y axis and he would simply adjust the position of the auger until the numbers reached zero?

You are the master of simplicity! Unfortunately that will not work in this application as there are various augers with various lengths and the terrain can vary such as hills and such. So having a fixed crosshairs that would always be at a different height.
