Cross-posting on several forums; I hope that's ok.

I have an LG model RC288 combination VCR and DVD RW. The VCR works fine, but the DVD won't play. I can insert a disk, and there's a brief spin, but that's all. No spin-up.

AI thinks this is a laser problem, and I'm looking for a replacement laser sled assembly. The current unit doesn't have any part number marking on it. Electrical interface is via a 45-pin flat cable.

I found this part on AliExpress; it has the same connector, looks quite similar to my existing part, and is specified for LG DVD RW drives.

My questions:
  1. 1. Does this sound like a laser problem?
  2. 2. Is the AliExpress part a drop-in replacement for my unit?
Thanks

Also try cleaning the little disc that spins the DVD. This sometimes helps to restore grip so the disk does not slip. Use alcohol and a soft cotton swab.

Next, if it is a laser problem, adjusting the laser current may be a remedy. You'll have to find a service manual for the DVD drive or poke around, looking for a potentiometer next to the laser unit. Mark the current position of the potentiometer and try moving it slightly left and right. After each small adjustment, check whether the DVD recoder recognizes the disk. This is a rather fiddly process and personally my last resort.
