    A worthy venture?

I guess it does depend on your local jurisdiction. I live in NY and have " helped" wire new houses " with the homeowner." We also did all the plumbing (internal and external sewer systems) without a license. Here (this county), all you need is to pass inspection of the local...

    A worthy venture?

I think having electrical hands on experience wold be extremely benificial. I've always worked as a technician both electrical and electronics. I've heard many an engineer being cussed out for having no practical insight. I think all engineers should work with a journeyman...

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

Looks good. You will test and find out. I'm not familar with that brand. Good luck.

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

Grainger has round 20 ufd 440AC oil filled capacitors: 1-9/16 dia by 3-1/4 p/n: 2MEH1 @ $14.47. Maybe you can sqeeze it into your enclosure. The Oil filled wil have a higher voltage rating, this ma solve your problem. Look at Grainger .com.

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

You may have to modify your enclosure. Maybe you can stay with the dry electrolytic if a good quality substitute is available. I will check my resources again. Where are you located?

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

You can test the 20 ufd capacitor by putting a 132.6 ohm resistor (or something close in value 125 -150 ohm non inductive) in series with the capacitor on the bench. The closer you can get to 132 ohms the more accurate. Apply AC voltage (any voltage 10VAC from a door bell...

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

Definitely sounds like its the start capacitor. The start capacitor is designed to give you a little extra torque when starting. I checked mine, and its the same electrolytic 20 mfd. I would try changing it out with a 20 ufd oil filled Areovox brand. The physical capacitor...

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

What brand is your Milling machine? Mine is a Grizzly G0484, with a 1.5 HP 220 motor.

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

If you are blowing capacitors that ,you have more of a problem than faulty capacitors. The 20 ufd (run) should be an oil filled and, the150 ufd (start) are dry electrolytic. There should be a device which disconnects the start capacitors out of the circuit once the motor gets...

    Improving power factor

I believe I read some other post where it was suggested placing differnt values of capacitance in parallel and measring the voltage developed until it peaked. Possibly another way would put a varialble resistor in series and measuring alternately across the winding and resistor...

    Improving power factor

John, When you calculated the Capacitance needed to bring the power factor to unity, was that makining an assumption there were no capacitance in the circuit to start with? I'm thinking what if there were some capacitance but the value reduced to a low level. Would it be best to...

Motor run and start capacitors, need suggestion on buying new ones

For some reason I can see any pictures you posted. posted. The run capacitor is an oil filled , and the start will be an electrolytic ype. Both must be non-polarized. Look at the original capaitors that came with the motor for labeling. You need to match up the ufd's and working...

    Improving power factor

Thank you for your explanation. I like hearing different explanations from different perspectives. I totally agree and like your explanation and math. I wonder if we can trust the nameplate data (1100 W @ 240). Obviously he's drawing 8.5 A (measured) , I wonder is that continuous...

    Improving power factor

I was reading in a text that when you put capacitors in series with a start winding you want to avoid resonance because of high voltage across the said components. I realise this is series resonance and purpose is for starting. Placing equal and opposite reactances in...

solution to soft start an ac induction motor

Running on 220VAC is allways better if you can. If you can find a 1 HP three phase motor; MC Master Carr carries a nice little electronic converter.page 869, Catalog 116: Three Phase AC Motor Speeed Controller. This unit is small, 4.5" x 6.9" x 4.4". Its variable and has...

    Improving power factor

Power factor question John, I'm curious as to how you came up with the numbers, what formula did you use? Eddie As far as his initial surge, I would suggest bringing each motor on line in a delayed sequence. Next I would suggest soft-start motor starters.

How fast will this 2W laser blind/burn?

Interesting question you have. I wonder how much heat you would need. Probably depend on the size of your blimp.. You need to remember the reason the laser is so powerful(realitivly); is it's concentrated power in a extremely small area. In terms of the retina of the eye that is a a...

    Axial Fans

Axial Fan As long as your fan is impedance protected (meaning it will have enough impedance to keep it from ever burning up if it stops), your good to go. I my opinion , it's better to keep the motor running all the time, rather than cycling. I vent my enclosed battery boxes...
