Wiring common ground for 7 components on enclosure lid

My Arduino project has 7 buttons and 2 LEDs mounted on the lid of my 3 1/4" by 4 1/2" aluminum box. I'd like to minimize the number of connections to the box mounted circuit board. Each of these components requires its own 5v connection, but I would like to wire all 7 grounds to a single wire...

    Rain gauge resetter

I enjoyed it... well, most of the time. After I got it working I tweaked something and nothing worked. Reversed the change and it still didn't work. After a couple days I discovered, ironically, that the battery terminals in the collector were corroded!

I now have a fully functional implementation on an Ardunio project board. Take a look at the last item in this album, a video. http://www.efsowell.us/Photo%20Albums/Oregon%20Scientific%20Rain%20Gauge/

    Rain gauge resetter

You nailed it! I've got the leads in place and brought outside the case. See album The plan for the Arduino controller is to provide 4 buttons: Increment by 1" (25 relay closures), 0.25" (5), and 0.04" (1). The 4th button will clear the total. I think I can do this with the UNO board, a relay...

No plot. The indoor unit (Ok, Base Station) saves the daily totals for previous 9 days that are displayed by successive button pushes. BTW, I've ordered some Arduino components and have been reading up on it.

    Rain gauge resetter

As usual, I was thinking about something more complex ;) but maybe the push button would work. One issue is how many button pushes it would take to run the total up several inches of rain, as would be necessary if the total was 5-10" when the battery failure occurred. Typically, the display goes...

    Rain gauge resetter

Works as you expected it would: See video So, maybe I should try getting a few turns of wire around reed switch leads and solder on the exposed side of the board? Or would it be best to try attaching on the other side? Then I would propose run those wires to a connector of some type mounted on...

Don't think so. See the photo album in my other reply today.

I took apart the collector today and took some photos: album Those boards are awfully small. Sorry to say so, but I don't think my eyes or soldering skills are up to the task. Now leaning to plan B: a stand alone box with a pulse generator an RF transmitter. The first task would be to determine...

    Rain gauge resetter

Yes. As a matter of fact I am thinking about opening it up today. I'll look it over to see how hard it might be. Also thinking if I can can identify the RF transmitter component and track down the frequency I'd consider building a stand-alone project box with a pulse generator and IR incorporated.

    Rain gauge resetter

My original post was about the indoor unit because it's the one that when pulled wipes out the stored data. In one of my posts I mentioned the one in the out door unit. When it fails any rain that occurs before I notice the problem doesn't get counted. I also brought up the outdoor unit because...

    Rain gauge resetter

Not a bad idea. It's on the "window box" shelf behind the kitchen sink. The reason it's there is because an earlier model was wired and it was an easy wire pull there. It's probably a bad place because it may be the reason for battery contact corrosion. I'll see if I can find another place with...

So you have a rain gauge something like mine? Brand, Model? Just curious. You're right about the storage not being at the outdoor unit. I seem to have not been clear about the this, but the battery in question is the one for the indoor unit. As I recall if the outdoor unit battery fails it can...

    Rain gauge resetter

No, it's not. The battery in the indoor unit is probably a bigger problem because if it fails the temperature readings don't display. Even there, however, using AC power would require a cord running across a kitchen counter top. Got enough of that already Also, I don't agree that the problem...

    Rain gauge resetter

Actually, they last for at least a year. If I'm on top of the matter I routinely change them in the collector and in the indoor display unit a week or two before the LA area rain-year begins. However, sometimes it's not the battery running down but failing due to corrosion. That happened about 3...
