    Yagi-Uda antenna 2100MHz

Done as you suggested. Still only "one bar out of 5" but ping times have gone down a bit more & speeds risen a bit more, so either the network is less congested or the whip antenna is working a little better? 47ms ping and around 7 meg download speed, that's perfectly useable

    Yagi-Uda antenna 2100MHz

Just tried drilling a hole in the wall & dangling a length of RG58 through it, with 35mm of inner exposed and 35mm of braid turned back against the cable to form a vague attempt at a sort of upside down, blow in the wind 1/4 wave dipole. (darness fell & don't fancy going up the ladder to bolt up...

    Yagi-Uda antenna 2100MHz

Thanks :) The side wall of my house is about 10 - 15 degrees off a straight line to the transmitter. This means, if I have the yagi placed as high as possible inside the house (office in the box room on the top floor), I'm aiming it at the tower at an acute angle to the wall (see image)...

    Yagi-Uda antenna 2100MHz

Just spent some time stripping down the connection box on the antenna. On a normal Yagi, the driven element is a straight, centre-fed dipole yes? This antenna isn't like that. The driven element seems to be a strip of aluminium maybe 6mm wide by about 13cm long (wild guess on the length...

    Aquarium LED Lighting Project

sorry Shane I wonder if I might have over analysed things & thus confused you.. I think the dimming function on these boards has just been left switched off as it were.. all you need to worry about is just supplying sufficient power to the board via the 2 main power leads & all should be ok...

    Aquarium LED Lighting Project

I'm hoping to provide evidence and proof of a really cool, fully working fishtank hood and it's only my apathy that's going to make Shane the winner :D Back on topic ;-)

    Yagi-Uda antenna 2100MHz

Thanks guys that's really helpful. The router works okay by itself, generally comes up with "1 bar out of 5" and I get up to about 10 Meg d/l speeds on the ookla speedtest. Odd thing is, plugging in the yagi seems to add nothing to either the signal "bars" nor the connection speed /...

    Aquarium LED Lighting Project

Trimpot unsuitable - ok. Could you use a suitably specified, full size potentiometer though - maybe one with a linear characteristic? I was thinking about the dimming by use of duty cycle - seems a nifty way of doing it but, in the aquarium application, would it actually be bad (I'm kinda...

    Yagi-Uda antenna 2100MHz

Here is my local (UK) cell tower: Station Type: Macrocell Height of Antenna: 13.7 Metres Frequency Range: 2100 MHz Transmitter Power: 17.89 dBW Maximum licensed power: 35 dBW Type of Transmission: UMTS It's no...

    Aquarium LED Lighting Project

Just had a look back at the specs you posted for the LED Operating Voltage:9.0-11.0V DC forward current: 1000MA max Rated power: 10W Looking at the 231114115641 driver board, it says Output Voltage: Constant 12V DC - 10W Output current: 900mA So it's one volt higher than the voltage range...

    Aquarium LED Lighting Project

231114115641 has a lot more info - from that one I'd hazard a yes (as long as your LED does use the voltage / current specs mentioned) the other one doesn't seem to give much tech detail but, the circuit board does look quite similar & it's a cheaper option - better if you were going to go...

    Aquarium LED Lighting Project

Flipping heck: Northern UK colloquialism. Translation: OMG I return you to the discussion at hand :D ^ yep that's the page I meant, it's really illuminating on the subject, all my missus heard that evening was me going "ahhhhhh.. so *that's* why..." over and again

    Aquarium LED Lighting Project

Hi Shane I'm doing something very similar, I have blown up plenty of gear so far so you can benefit from my learning curve: Watch the current through the LED itself, like a hawk. Don't worry about the voltage, it's the current that's paramount. You get a runaway situation very easily with the...

    SMA crimp plug

Took a bit of a search but looks like where i am, cpc is my friend http://cpc.farnell.com/1/1/88801-plug-sma-straight-clamp-rg58-19-01f-3-tgg-multicomp.html :-)

    SMA crimp plug

No special tools needed, just a standard iron? Sounds good, have to look for these. Let me know if you have a link as to where to order decent ones :) I can see some on ebay if I search 'sma solder plug' etc, but they look just like the crimp type with a tiny hole drilled in the side of the...

    SMA crimp plug

ok thanks for the info Steve See this kind of connector; http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/SMA_connector.jpg What would you call that if you were googling for a supplier.. it looks like a version that can be assembled with a little spanner, obviating the need for a...

    SMA crimp plug

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-sma-crimp-plug-rg58-mm55k I have something like the above. Not pictured on the above link, is a sort of short length of metal tube that seems to slide over the knurled part, with a tad of clearance. I stripped back my coax cable & was able to assemble...

Continuity or infinity on a starter?

aye good advice - lead acid batteries are capable of producing a mixture of gaseous hydrogen and oxygen inside the tops of the cells, a nearby spark can turn the battery into a bomb that throws fairly strong sulphuric acid over everything nearby
