    Marks dog door

How long will it take the dog to realize the door is open and get through the door? What happens if the dog tries to push the door open early?

adding fans and heatsinks to components

Does your hifi have excess power to draw from? Probably not. An external power supply is suggested. You can drive a few fans from a 12 V 1 Amp power supply. Shop for the physical size you need and take note of amps needed. Blow in or suck out? Two fans? One blowing, one sucking to provide flow...

    Novice designing circuits

What temperature range? Does C or F matter? What range of voltage and current are to be monitored?

    thyristor vs triac

Thyristor is a general group of transistors that includes SCRs TRIACs, SCSs and such.

    Novice designing circuits

It is hard to respond not having any idea what kind of circuits you are talking about. A confidentiality agreement is certainly a wise thing for you. Us that where you want to start?

    digital clock

More specifics would help. Just hours and minutes? Do you have a preference for TTL or CMOS (low power)? 7-segment LED display? Battery or line powered? How big a display? Have you built stuff before?

    Presettable counters

Presettable counters let you set a starting count. You can restart at that count by monitoring the outputs of the counter and feeding it back to the Load* input, as on the 7416x family. Data sheets will often, not always, include application examples.

    Apple vs the FBI

Are the criminals the only ones losing privacy on this question? Those who do not encrypt are not concerned. T^hose not engaged in criminal activity are not involved. The only ones being protected by blocking the FBI's request are criminals.

    Apple vs the FBI

The 'back door isn't the same thing. A back door is an access around the encryption process. What the FBI is asking for here is just to undo the lockout on wrong guesses. They are not basking Apple to reveal any secrets of their software. People (criminals) may stop using the product that can be...

    Apple vs the FBI

There doesn't seem to be a bad argument on either side on this question. I won't be unhappy any way it turns out.

    Apple vs the FBI

Thanks. I missed that post. No surprise I couldn't find a data sheet for a custom part. I assume there is a way to upgrade the program of the internal processor? So what the FBI wants done can be accomplished by just a few lines of code changes. It is a question of SHOULD it be done, not IF it...

    Apple vs the FBI

The bread is not specifically designed to aid the criminal activity. Are these phones specifically bought for this feature by those intending to use it for a criminal activity? Planning to commit a crime should wave rights to privacy from the government. I also think the FBI would like to set a...

    Apple vs the FBI

Re: remove the Flash Bypass the operating system and get to Flash directly? I don't know how the device is built. The Flash could be internal to the processor.

JFETs as a current source and a question.

Just for grins and giggles I ran three of the LEDs at full power for a while. Measured current was less than expected. As current increased voltage across the LED did also until I maxed the 12 Volt limit, then current started dropping. Instead of the expected 100 mA I got about 75 mA. Still more...

    DIY electronics contest

Once you decide on a project and have a parts list approach businesses that carry those parts (and people here or other forums) for donations. How well stocked is your work bench for tools and parts? Ask your instructor where he/she gets donations? If you ain't rich, be bold. You have nothing to...

    DIY electronics contest

Well it's good to see a high school program going. Are you looking for something original or a kit? Before you put out money for parts try asking for donations of parts. You would be surprised how much support you might get.

    Wanted: Very large heatsink.

The best classic heat sink I have seen is a popular author using a motorcycle motor aluminum head as a heat sink. Is this for the personal work bench or for sale?

JFETs as a current source and a question.

Okay, current revision. Multi-column multi-row of white LEDs. Common constant current source. Dimmable with a 500 ohm pot. Up to 100 mA design. But the LEDs I used are rated at 30 mA so I wouldn't expect them to last long at 100 mA. :-) I had to get away from the 2N5642 and CA3146 to get 100 mA...

    Apple vs the FBI

Emotion? I guess I should have taken more time in expressing my idea. If phone manufacturers had to turn over the design software (source code) to the FCC, or some such office, there would be no problem, well less of a problem, for the FBI to modify the software themselves. What does Russia do?

JFETs as a current source and a question.

The two resistors in parallel were intended to be a 10 ohm resistor with a trimming resistor in parallel. After building it the second resistor was not needed. I got sufficient trimming with 5% values. As far as adding a resistor on the transistor on the left ... yes. Originally I figured it...
