I'm Looking for a Simple Switching Solution

Hi Martin, Many thanks for your reply. If our heating was purely gas or electric the cylinder and wall stat would maintain the circulating water temperature up to a preset temperature. It would do this by opening and closing the various ports. If all the ports were closed, the boiler would use...

I'm Looking for a Simple Switching Solution

I have central heating throughout our boat, but it's never before been used to supply domestic hot water for showers etc. We've previously used mains (shore power) water heating with an immersion heater. Having just replaced our solid fuel heater with a bigger better model we now have sufficient...

Using a Varistor to solve a back EMF problem

Thanks for this. In the past I used 24volt auto relays but they too failed. KrisBueNZ's solution has been a real workhorse, surviving 3 full years of full blown domestic use. My real problem now is the apparent lack of suitable diodes in the UK, I could do with a more common part. As it is I...

Using a Varistor to solve a back EMF problem

Hi Harold Kapp. Thank you so much for that info. I've checked around several uk sites and struggled. I actually did find US supplier and have ordered 2 units for about the same money as the mouser unit's single supply. I really don't understand why the UK stocks are like hens teeth. Thank you...

Using a Varistor to solve a back EMF problem

I know that this is a blast from the past and that sadly KrisBlueNZ passed in 2015 and is sadly missed. He very kindly helped me with a 24 volt pump problem. After 5 years his solution to my back emf problem still stands proud. I want to reproduce exactly the same solution to the same problem...

    A Question About PWM Controllers

Thanks Alex_t. The pump is rated at 2.2 amps maximum - This is the pump https://www.mackengineering.co.uk/cm30p7-1-24-johnson-circulating-pump-24v-mag-drive.html The pwm I'm using says its rated at 20 amps, but I don't know at what voltage. I do know that some pumps have up to 5 preset...

    A Question About PWM Controllers

Hi All I'm updating the heating system on our boat. Currently we have a central heating circuit running from a back boiler in a solid fuel fire. I'm updating this system by replacing our small 5KW output stove to one which has better output, but more importantly also has a back boiler mounted...

What is this component fitted to my 24 volt pump?

Thanks Harald. I'll try to post a pic of the item. Does the forum recommend a particular free picture hosting site?

What is this component fitted to my 24 volt pump?

My boats central heating is controlled by a small Johnson 24 volt magnetic drive circulating pump. The speed of the pump is controlled by a pwm with attached thermistor fastened to the boiler outlet pipe. A week or so ago the pump speed went a bit haywire then the motor stopped. I traced the...

Reduce off grid freezer startup current?

I've been reading on various websites about reducing the startup current required by freezers for off grid use. My freezer is Beko 'A' class Model ZSA 436 W 230 volt 50 Hz 55 watts and .25 amps. The freezer is about 12 years old I've just installed a Victron 1200 watts pure sine wave inverter...

    Pipestat query

Yes it is 12 volt, but not actually my boat this time. We're actually 24 volts. I've wired the stat thru the common, marked number one, to terminal three ( make on rising temperature). The original problem I had was due to my own fault, a badly made connection. The stat is now working correctly...

    Pipestat query

Ouch! I hope that's not the case. Can you get a 12 (or 24) volt pipe stat?

    Pipestat query

A degree (or 10) differential wouldn't be a problem. The only reason for fitting this is so that the pump will start and stop itself without boiling or running all the time when the water is cold. We don't want to hear the pump any more than necessary.

    Pipestat query

I want to use the pipestat to turn a 12 volt circulating pump on at 30C and keep the pump running until water temp drops below 30C again. Whichever way I connect the stat it isn't doing what I want it to. There are 3 electrical connectors in the stat. As you may have guessed, I'm not a pro, just...
