    Cleaning potentiometers

A 100K pot will not measure 100K in the center position if you are measuring at the wiper. The wiper should give you 50K in the center. However, if the pot is measured in-circuit, you might be measuring across other circuitry as well. Also note that some pots do not have the wiper as the center...

    Increased voltage!

sorry to deviate from the original topic... The roof would become the lightning rod. This would mean that all of the lightning current would rush through this metal roof on it's way to ground. Any wood or other flammables connected to the metal would go up like stick matches. Even a lightning...

How can I discharge a capacitor...

No.....do not short it out. Use the power resistor as audioguru suggested. A direct short and spark causes damage "inside" the capacitor as well. What kind of current surge do you think it takes to create that spark? It will not last as long when you damage it. MP

    Increased voltage!

Hmmm....that is strange. Grounding the metal roof would make it a good lightning rod during thunderstorms. I would have left the metal roof floating. Of course, all of the plumbing vents that come out of the roof are all metal pipes with a good ground, so you still need a good lightning rod for...

I need someone to build me a little toy!

Hey guys, I have just moved this topic to the buy/sell area where it belongs. Please keep all business transactions in the buy/sell area and not in the discussion areas. Thanks. MP

    missing some basic theory

Here is a nice tutorial on series and parallel resistors that is not related to food: http://schools.matter.org.uk/Content/Resistors/Default.htm Hope it helps. MP

    Question about Ground Loops

Think about it....If you have equipment interfacing with each other and zero is not at the same potential on all of them, what will this do to the interaction? MP

    ADC0832 Interfacing

It is a good suggestion, Edward. It is possible that econ needs the resolution. Hope you didn't take my post out of context. I just wanted to add to it as it seemed econ was confused about the operation of the ADC and others were confused what you meant by using op-amps. Talking about...

Need help deciding on a multimeter

look for resolution and accuracy. Also number of digits. These are common aspects that will determine price. They are also aspects which will cause you problems if they are not good. Also, ask for a calibration certificate to see if the meter has been calibrated to any specification. If it has...

    Increased voltage!

Hehehehe...you are playing with fire, my friend.... ;D I am just curious, but what ever inspired you to stick one of your mains wires in water?  ::) MP

I have seen posts in the buy/sell area of this site. I do not know if there was any success since there is no feedback regarding transactions in that area. MP

    Quick AC question

In the case that you do have two different sized prongs, it is the same wiring as the picture below. It might not have the round ground prong, but wiring is the same. (The Neutral, Ground, and screw in the center should all be common to each other.) MP

    Cleaning potentiometers

Potentiometers are being manufactured very cheaply these days. You used to see a much better quality in potentiometers. Lately, most pots will not have a cover or will have an open frame where it is easy for dirt to get on the resistive material. Years ago there was no such thing as contact...

I need someone to build me a little toy!

It is really hard to find this type of help on an International forum where most readers are looking for information to advance their knowledge. Asking for a non-disclosure agreement without knowing anything about the device could hamper future development for a budding entrepreneur. For...

    256 outputs from 8 bit

One method is to use a 4 port microcontroller and connect the port pins in a matrix. 16 ground pins and 16 control pins in a matrix will give you 16x16 combinations, or 256. You would change the data direction in the code to allow for 8 of the port pins to be inputs when needed. You could insure...

    ADC0832 Interfacing

econ, You do not have to use 5V. Nor do you need to vary the reference voltage. It is fine. The analog voltage will give you a number which represents the input. It is capable of a DC voltage between 0 and 5 volts. You do not need to use the full scale voltage. After you get a digital number, it...
