    Generally the two outer ends of the pot are connected to the L.V. supply one to -ve the other to +ve. The pot centre/slider goes to the controller input I.C. You could measure the three inputs and see what the result is with the pot non-connected. M.

    Only if the board end is labeled or marked somehow. In some units like this, you can short the LV supply out with a mis-connection. M.

    Are you sure you have the 3 pot connections correct? Generally there is 0v at one end, +ve at the other end and the pot slider is the third connection, which varies the voltage as a potentiometer should.when rotated. M..

    That is what I was getting at! If the pot is disconnected and it does NOT run, then it points to incorrect connection when you DO connect the pot. M.

    VFD's do not work well with 1PH motors, this is the reason that most use a 3ph motor with a 1ph supply VFD. If only 110w you may be OK with the triac version. The other alternative is to throttle the output, this also reduces the load, if a common radial vane pump. M.

    Would this be a 24k rpm H.S. spindle by any chance? Ran off of a VFD? Or if another 400hz source, any poor/high-resistance joint creates heat. But as per H.K. why was not a phase loss detected?, usually by O/L trip M.

    I agree with whonoes, a stud welder is relatively easy to make, just a DC supply, a large capacitor and a SCR. One thing to ensure pressure on the electrode when the SCR is triggered. M.
