How to Mount LED Display in Cabinet

Sadly there is no PCB (see pic). The wires are soldered onto the display leads and shrink wrapped.

How to Mount LED Display in Cabinet

Does anyone have any good tricks on how to mount an LED (3x 7 segment) display in a project cabinet? It's a speed readout on a PMW speed controller for a automated plasma cutter I am building. My thoughts are cut a rectangular piece of semi rigid plastic, drill mounting holes on either side of...

    Flyback Diodes

Thanks everyone. I will likely add my own diode but the thread really got me thinking. I will try both these methods and see what kind of results I get. That's part of the fun for me.

    Flyback Diodes

I see your point, but do you think this test would be a real indication of diode being present though? (My decades old electronic knowledge is failing me perhaps.) The coil on each mag brake is 48.2 ohms, measured either polarity. So supposedly this means there is no diode across the coil. Yet...

    Flyback Diodes

Hi all. I am building an RC Lawnmower from scratch. It's almost finished and I am preparing to test. The motors are two 24VDC wheelchair motors. Traditionally people who build these remove the mag brakes from the motors. The motors are 250W each, and require 24VDC @ 30mA to each magbrake to...

Mounting Multiple PCBs in Rough Environment

Thanks. I think I have enough suggestions now to solve the issue. A last trick I taught myself years ago was in vibration-prone environments to glue a rare earth magnet between the mounting plate and the project case. The idea here is to catch any nuts or bolts that do shake loose, thus...

Mounting Multiple PCBs in Rough Environment

Good advice from both of you. I was looking at traditional standoffs but wondering if there was something new and improved that replaced them. I have used the plastic self adhesive ones as well as screw based ones, but a few of the boards are so small, it's hard to find plastic self adhesive...

Mounting Multiple PCBs in Rough Environment

Hi everyone. I have a PCB mounting question. I am building a RC lawn mower. I have all the electronics working and am doing the metal work for the frame, drivetrain, etc. There are a lot of electronics: RC receiver, one LAC board for an actuator, two RC relay boards, one Arduino board, one...

Tapping 12V from 24V Battery Source

Just thought I would update this post for other buck converter nubes. I ordered two but couldn't get the darn things to work. Of course the high quality documentation (i.e., NONE) that came with it was a total help. Anyways, after doing some research I discovered that buck converters only work...

Tapping 12V from 24V Battery Source

I think the Matchbox option is the least costly of the two.

Tapping 12V from 24V Battery Source

Thanks :) I have to admit originally I blew off your response when I saw the inductor and number of components on the board as I thought it looked pretty inefficient. My circuit knowledge is pretty good, but dated. So I wondered if you were to step it down why not use a linear voltage regulator...

Oh man, did you ever date yourself with that post. AND made me nostalgic at the same time. Thanks.

Tapping 12V from 24V Battery Source

Hi all.... I am building an RC Lawnmower. Most of the HD motors are wheelchair gear type and require 24V. But some of the electronics I plan to use are 12V, for example the linear actuators. Can I tap the series connector line between the batteries for the 12V? I think this may be how it is...

Electronics Parts in Calgary, Alberta ?

I agree -- I buy a lot of grab bags and bulk packs online too as the price is great. Resisters and caps mostly, but even some transistors too. But sometimes I just like to walk down aisles and look. Sadly, this is something we seem to be giving up as a consumer society for the convenience of online.

Electronics Parts in Calgary, Alberta ?

UPDATE 2018 Aug 24: Must have been karma. I was just there is AM and was told they are renovating a bay downstairs and plan to move both stores downthere with more room. The space they are in is just temp. Yeah! No more stairs!

@Minder : I think your avatar would be super funny if Albert were exposing a different finger. Then we'd all say. "Oh Al, you're always such a drama queen."

    New Test Bench !

I do metal fabrication for a life-long hobby, and dabble in electronics. In the process of reorginzing my shop I realized I could finally move my electronics stuff to a devoted test bench like I used to have years ago when I was a teenager. Instead of standing up to work, I can now sit down. I...

Electronics Parts in Calgary, Alberta ?

With the recent move of Active Tech in Calgary to an upstairs office in Calgary, does anyone know of good parts supplier in Calgary? I already use B&E, but since Active Tech was bought by Solarbotics and moved them into a tiny cube of a storefront, their selection is poor now, and I don't even...
