    VCR Cover Causing Noise

    First thing I'd check is if the cover is dented-in from having something heavy on top of the recorder. Sounds like the cover may be rubbing against the moving parts internally(?)

    Yeah, the build-up between the lead plates is often deep down on the bottom, and 'shorts' the lead plates together. May not be salvageable, but when I try it, I just get the sulfuric acid from the car parts store and give it a shot.

    I would tend to think then, that it would be unwise to run without the fan, as the device was obviously in need of one to operate efficiently (or so the people who designed it thought).

    I agree with dave9. The purpose of the duct is to vent the hot air, and restriction of the output vent make the A/C run less efficiency.

    Everything in my area gets bought-up by, and shipped to China. You might check with some of those China-based vendors. They buy everything the Americans don't want to warehouse anymore.

    I'll mention, a lot of the circuits you see coming out of China, they are allowed to use whatever they want (no chemical MSDS requirements). Your brown glue might just be what is cheap and easy to get wherever your controllers were manufactured.
