    You mean like the Ground in the breaker box? I did this once with my computer in one part of my house to an amplifier on the other side of the house 40 foot away on separate power circuits. I didn't have any ground humming issues. Or at the very least they where not noticeable.

    No, re-read what I said and what steve said. YOU MUST HAVE A CLOCK PULSE for the 4017 to work, but a 555 is most certainly not the only way to provide a clock pulse. edit: I ain't sure how to take your comment.     All you gotta do is put the red wire on the empty terminal. OFF I presume is in the middle, so when the switch is to either side it will short that side pin and the middle together.
