    relocating a hot IC

I hate being the bearer of potential bad news, but offer my 2-cents worth here. It's entirely possible that normal operational heat got to the area over time if it was poorly designed. But I never discount the possibility that something else in the circuit went, causing the heat damage you see...

    Help my TV

My guess would be that they repaired the problem they found with the Vertical, but that something else in the circuit killed the same component that they replaced again. Just letting you know that if they don't look for the root problem and just repair what they repaired before, it won't last.

Akai GX-365D What's this "DL" in capacitor description?

I don't think you'll have a problem with 73's de Edd's advice. My experience with capacitor companies is they sometimes (especially in the early days), marked their caps with a product line designation (which may stand for 'double layer', or just their product line of this cap type). The purpose...

Be aware that the thermal fuse blew for a reason, and it might be time to just replace that fan.

automatic power off problem in DMM

My first choice would be to try to return it, or check into factory warranty period. If you're just stuck with a meter that doesn't work and no options for returning it under warranty, your other options require you to have some troubleshooting/repair skill. I hesitate to offer advice on this...

    Noob power plug question

Of course. Measure the dimensions of the plug you want to use, and get it's female mate. Just make sure your power supply is the AC version that your device utilizes. Be sure the female connector you buy is physically configured to actually fit and be secured in your device. There are many...

automatic power off problem in DMM

Well, you said it's new. Does it have a return policy? Sounds like a repair problem to me.

    The Day The Symbol Changed

The worst mish-mash of circuit symbols I've seen are ones made in India. Half of their engineers were trained by the British, and the other half have been trying to comply with the Pacific Rim upstart companies versions of electronic symbols. I don't worry too much about earth grounds CDRIVE...

    Noob power plug question

You know the problem. Those barrel jacks come in different diameters and some even have different depths. The only way you can be sure, is to get the exact size replacement. The other issue is that as you also recognize, those power adapters come in AC or DC. You CANNOT interchange them. If...

    The Day The Symbol Changed

I've talked to guys over the years about this and some of the other 'strange' symbols I've seen in schematics. I have no definitive explanation for it, but this is my 3rd person take. Some group of guys at some electronics school in some part of the world decide that the symbol they create is...

How To Annoy Those Helping You Out

They don't teach spelling,or punctuation in schools anymore. They just teach you how to input the abbreviated slang for words into your mobile device. I have no problem here, because *steve* just deletes my posts when I annoy him. I think the Moderators listened to your idea,donkey...

    bad screen

Alls you gotta do with one of those things is drop it, and it's gone. I tend to agree with 73's de Edd and davenn though. Somebody whacked it at the big red circle. Either you know what happened, or momma's tired of you watching too much football. In the 1960's you could have re-sold it to a...

    Aftermarket Radio LCD Swap ?

I wouldn't mess with it. You mean to tell me with everything on the market you can't find something already made that you like? Darned right on the Chinese stuff. You'll have a radio you like and no display shortly if you buy what you're looking at. They don't last.

Choose Software or Hardware in electronics ??

I'm with hevans1944 on this. Choose what you like to do, and concentrate on that with supporting knowledge of the other. I'm a hardware guy. When my kid started college I knew he wouldn't like it. He concentrated on software and is happy. Be happy.

A place to find modern equivalents of old components

There's no all-encompassing single-source that I know about. When I need to replace an obsolete part, the first thing I do is Google the part number and 'Cross Reference' or 'Substitution'. There are scattered substitution lists, but with so many parts manufactured over the years, no one has all...

    Removing circuit

Maybe I'm missing something, but the arrow-locking type usually just needs you to use a pair of needle nose pliers to compress. You squeeze the two sides of the lock with the needle nose, and pull-up the PCB at each post, one after the other.
